About Taxza

Last reviewed: 1 May 2026 · Maintained by the Taxza editorial team, Cape Town

Taxza is an independent South African web utility that helps individuals and small business owners estimate three of the most common tax calculations they encounter: provisional tax, import duty and VAT, and salary after tax. The site is built and maintained from Cape Town, South Africa.

Why we built Taxza

Most freely available tax calculators are either buried inside accounting software (so you need an account just to run a number), wrapped in pop-up ads, or use outdated brackets without telling you. We wanted three things: results in under five seconds, the formula visible alongside every answer, and an honest "last updated" stamp on every page so users can decide whether to trust the number for their tax year. Taxza is built mobile-first because a large share of South Africans access the web primarily on a phone, and tax tools should not punish that.

Editorial standards and methodology

Every calculator on Taxza is built directly against the rates and thresholds published by the South African Revenue Service (SARS). Our process for each tax year is:

  • Read the relevant SARS legal publication (Government Gazette / Budget Speech / SARS Guide) for that year.
  • Encode the brackets, rebates, and thresholds in a versioned configuration file so we can support multiple tax years simultaneously.
  • Cross-check at least three reference cases against published SARS examples or the Income Tax Act before publishing.
  • Show the formula and every input on the result page so the user can verify the answer by hand.

Where SARS publishes mid-year changes (for example, an interim VAT rate adjustment), we update the affected calculators within two weeks and bump the "last updated" date on the page.

What Taxza is not

Taxza is a calculator, not a tax advisor. We do not file returns, advise on tax structures, or provide opinions on individual tax positions. Where your situation is unusual — a complex CGT event, foreign income, an estate, a section 11(j) doubtful debt allowance, or any tax controversy — please consult a registered SAIT, SAICA, or SAIPA practitioner. The estimates Taxza produces are designed to help you budget and sanity-check your accountant's number, not to replace one.

Privacy and data

The free calculators do not require sign-in. Inputs are processed client-side in your browser and never stored on our servers. If you opt in to email reminders for SARS deadlines, we store only the email address and reminder preferences you provide, and you can unsubscribe in one click from any reminder we send. See our Privacy Policy for full detail.

Funding and independence

Taxza is independently owned and funded. We have no commercial relationship with SARS or with any tax practice firm. The site does not display affiliate links inside calculator results. A subscription tier ("Taxza Pro") funds the SARS deadline calendar, AI tax assistant, and document checklist features for small businesses; the free calculators remain free, with no feature gating.

Contact and corrections

Found a calculation that looks wrong, a SARS rate that has changed, or a tax year we should add? Please tell us via the contact page. Corrections are usually live within 48 hours, and we credit users who report substantive issues if they want public acknowledgement.
